Last Sunday I got to know some of my neighbours - perhaps a little better than I would have liked - as I did a bit of a door knock. Scary stuff.
I have always been impressed by the generous and unconditional support the Salvation Army gives needy people in the local community and have often felt the joy of giving to a worthy cause. As a volunteer collector I began at the designated house number. Things were going well until Mr Redneck answered his door with an aggressive: "Have you read todays AGE?" Replying in the negative his response was: "Well I'm NOT giving to the Salvation Army cause of the money they sent the Indonesians."
Oh well of course. Tens of thousands left homeless by a tsunami are suddenly less deserving because an Australian tourist found with 4kgs of marijuana in her boogie board bag has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Yeah Mr Stingy that really works for me. Have a nice day!
